Tax refund base on incorrect income.

Options
Hi just a quick question. After holding on the phone to HMRC and finally getting through 40 minutes later; the person ended the call as they said they couldn't hear me grrr!

So here I am looking for a quicker answer if possible.

I have been given a £16.60 refund for my income tax. My income last year based on my P60 was £7612 (I work school hours). But on my tax calculation my income is stated as £8627. I'm trying to understand why my income would be stated as such when it never changes. I have set hours and do not get paid overtime I have to have time off in lieu.

Can anyone shed light please?

not enough info to go on

a mistake on your P60 can only be caused by your employer, have you asked them?

Does your March payslip gross taxable to date agree with your P60 figure?

Do you pay into the pension scheme, possibly LGPS, and is so how much?

    Hi
Thank you for replying. My P60 figure was 7612. I do pay towards a pension but it's around £45 a month. I can clarify this when I get home if it makes a difference?

If it's the LGPS you pay into then your gross income is reduced by that amount. Your P60 would show the taxable income which is the gross minus pension contributions provided it is the LGPS.

If you can provide the figures from the March payslip such as gross taxable pay to date, tax paid to date and tax code it would help clarify what's going on.

OK your March payslip agrees with your P60 figure as far as taxable pay is concerned. The questions from blondebubbles are important - did you have any other income from any other source?

However you haven't shown what the tax paid for March and the total tax for the year are. Could you give those figures please?

You haven't said what your tax code for 2014-15 was, and I'm quite surprised that nobody else has asked you for it before this. If it was the standard 1000L then on the figures you have provided you should not have paid any tax, and if you did pay any then it should all have been refunded. I have a suspicion that in fact your tax code was lower than 1000L, in which case you need to dig out the P2 Coding Notice that you'll have received (probably in March 2014) which will explain how it is calculated.

The figures on your P60 suggest that it covers only 10 months.
Did you have any taxable income for the first two months of the tax year?
Also would help if you could give all of the figures from the P60 and March payslip.
