When does child support stop

I'm hoping someone has the answer to this. My son (18) goes to university in September and is going to Glasgow to live I have just been in touch with CSA to let them know and they have told me I have to pay till age 20 I've been under the impression that when he goes to uni my obligation to pwc stops I've already said to him I'd give him some money weekly as he obviously will need to buy all the essentials etc with living away from home. Why would I be giving ex money when he wont even be living there He will be doing a degree in languages but I don't think that makes any difference
Thanks in anticipation

The rules are UK wide (definitely mainland, not sure on NI)

It sounds like the person that you spoke to is confused. 2 areas say it stops when a person starts Uni
    Exceptions

Child maintenance can stop sooner if, for example:
    • the child is 16 or over and getting certain state benefits - including Income Support
    • the child stops being eligible for Child Benefit for any other reason
    • the parent receiving the payment stops being the main carer of the child
    • the parent receiving the payment doesn’t want it anymore
    • either parent dies
    • the parent paying the maintenance goes to prison - payments are reduced to zero but may increase when they’re released
Child benefit stops when the person goes to Uni as it is no longer full time education within the definition used

The qualifying full time education is
    • A levels or similar - eg Pre-U, International Baccalaureate
    • Scottish Highers
    • NVQs and other vocational qualifications up to level 3
    • home education - if started before your child turned 16
    • traineeships in England

I think the person you spoke to is confused because it mentions the age 20, but that will only apply if in full time education

Thanks for the replies that is exactly what I thought as well. Without being ageist the woman sounded a bit elderly but was determined that it couldn't stop till twenty. When I said he was moving away and wouldn't be staying with his mother she basically said oh well that's the breaks I will try again this week and hopefully speak to someone more knowledgeable.is there a general online page for contacting Csa I might write to them

This may be a red herring, but there is a provision for a child in Scotland to make a claim for support to be paid to them. You might want to check this as I'm not aware of the full rules/entitlements

I think it stops in the August before he goes to Uni, when the eligibility for CB ceases. I would request a CB check at the end of August, and if the PWC is no longer eligible for CB then the liability will end.

That is outside the Child Maintenance system. The child will need to take their own legal action to achieve this.

It applies to full-time non-advanced/higher education.

CSA support liability stops when the Child Benefit stops, in this case as the child is going to Uni.

The CB final payment will be August.

Suggest a check is requested now.

NB. whilst liability to child support stops, if their are any outstanding arrears, these will still have to be paid. A separate payment schedule can be negotiated for this.

Liability will end first Monday in September which this year is 7th.

Don't ring them, write, then if they get it wrong you have better evidence. If you tried to find the member of staff who advised you last week you would struggle and if you did they would deny all knowledge of telling you Scotland was different.
