working for Tesco and Asda

Hello! I am currently employed by a sister company pf Tesco called Tesco Family Dinning Ltd which runs a chain of restaurants called Decks in Tesco Extra stores. As i've had this job for a year and the numbers of hours were cut down i decided to get a second job to assure i had enough money to support myself . I was hired by ASDA as a grocery assistant , signed a contract , did the training and worked 2 days until the managers informed me that i will have to sign a resignation letter because i was working for one of their competitors creating a conflict of interest. They were fully aware of my existing job, it was written in my CV and i mentioned it during the interviews as well. Did anything similar happened to anyone? What to do from here ?i already made plans including this second job.

    Are you in a union?

Don't sign a resignation letter, but if you can, take a copy away. A copy of your CV and of this letter - unsigned of course - would be evidence for a grievance, although I think you will have to face up to losing this job.

At your level within ASDA, a claim of conflict of interest is patently stupid.
  • I am not in an union. Even my manager said that they had no right to terminate my contract, i would at least claim to be paid for the hours i have worked there.
  • Once you have worked for a supermarket, you cannot work for any other chain ever again. It's not public information but it's common practice. I worked for a supermarket once. I can never work for any other supermarket in UK ever again and I will never be re-employed by them ever again, or so my last manager told me. They have a database that they share with all supermarket chains.

I'm sorry ciaccino but that's complete balderdash. I've worked for Cooperative, Iceland and Tesco at various points in my life. Please tell me how you think they employ experienced staff if all their new hires have never worked retail before?

  • I am not working directly with Tesco , i am a waitress in a restaurant that happened to be in the Tesco store . I do not depend on the store, even the managers that run my restaurant are not from the Tesco store.

Not sure if serious or not. Have you heard of Richard Pennycook? Moved from CFO of Morrisons to CEO of COOP.

OP, what did your employment contract say in regards to other jobs/conflicts of interest etc?
    Thinking critically since 1996....
  • I haven't found anything relevant to the supposed conflict of interests in the contract.
