Letter from Lowell

Hi

I have just received a letter from Lowell saying they have bought a debt in my name. They say they are seeking to confirm my details - they gave no details of the debt itself and made no request for payment. I have never heard of the company they say the debt is with - though a Google search shows it's a some sort of clothes catalogue. The letter is addressed to me, but my name spelt incorrectly.

I rang them and they asked for my DOB which I declined to give. I am about to write to them and ask for my file under the DPA. I have never had a bad debt in my life, and never had a catalogue - should I ignore it or send the letter?

Any advice appreciated.

    Either...

    - A mistrace and they are after someone of a similar name.
    - Something you have forgotten about
    - ID theft in your name.

By far the most likely is the 1st of those.

If this is not yours then dispute it or ignore depending on what seems best. If disputing tell them you will be taking them to the FOS and reporting them to the FCA.

Most important thing in cases such as this is to check your credit files to make sure nothing nasty has been put on them about this debt.

If it has, then obviously you have to take it more seriously and concentrate on getting that removed.

As Fermi says, its most likely a mis-trace, they will be after someone with a similar name, so they target however many people in your area have that name, and hope one of them takes the bait.
I would write, not call, and tell them in no uncertain terms you are not the person they are looking for, and not to contact you again.

Keep an eye on your credit file, as suggested, just in case, as Lowell have a habit of shooting first, and asking questions later.

Ignore it, and don't phone them. Phishing letter.
