Buying a car???

Thinking of replacing our x reg toyota avensis 5 door. 89000miles. Engine replaced at 67000 f.o.c. by Toyota. Starting to get expensive, new shocks coming up.

Trying to balance new purchase against 1 yr old second hand car, another Toyota.

Feel bit like a lamb to the slaughter. Would appreciate any ideas over way to go ref finance. or keeping the car?

Really need to change we feel as daughter about to start uni and long runs on the horizon, plus we need very reiable family car. Retiring in 8 years time so would want any finance finished by this time.

Certainly be wary about taking any finance the garage can offer. Make sure that you cross check against what you can get on the high street. Watch out as well for HP options where they include a initial and final document fee, as many high street lenders charge nothing for this.

Having said that, if you are buying new, then often the garage might have 0% deals.

Just do the sums of the life of the loan and see which is cheapest / best.

Your best bet is to shop around. You can get surprisingly good deals on new Toyotas. Decide what you want, search best price on line. Then take the quote to local dealer and ask him to price match.

NEVER take finance from the dealer, before checking alternatives. See car loans for 6.3% @ http://www.moneybackbank.co.uk/loans/index.asp?page=home&exp=30&cm_mmc=moneysupe-_-sup-_-ec03994bestbuys5111-_-apply

A lot of manufacturers are doing 0% finance deals on new cars, SEAT, Ford, Vauxhall, Mazda, Citroen that I know of (probably others too). Usually only on selected models, but with a little hunting around you should be able to find something that fits the bill.

For car reviews have a look at

    http://www.whatcar.co.uk/

This site will also give you what they call a target price for each car, which is a price you should be able to negotiate rather than paying the list price. If in doubt take a print out along with and show the salesman, if they won't drop from list price walk away. Just because you want a 0% finance deal don't feel you can't negotiate on price.

This site also gives readers reviews, although often you find it is the unhappy readers who make the effort to post their thoughts.

Something like the Mazda 6 is a similar size to your Avensis and should match Toyota in the reliability stakes. There are a number of 0% finance deals on them if you have a reasonable deposit to put down.

Sorry just read your post again and it looks like you are after another Toyota. Please feel free to ignore this post if this is the case...

  • hey most garages will try to offer you finance of some sort.

There is a good chance they will offer you more money for your car if they think you are taking finance.

Dont sign then and there, go away look up loan deals on the internet, or on here.

Thats what i did and got a much better deal on a loan than i did on finance.
    That mrs macchicken to you!

my best ever 'deal' was taking out car finance via a franchised dealer. As long as you pay attention to their details and terms you shouldn't discount them out of hand to go for a high street/internet loan. Sometimes using both is the best option. Ours was with Vauxhall/GMAC, by combining a part-ex, a high street loan and the minimum loan possible from GMAC/Vauxhall(£1000 but with an APR of 30%) they provided a 'finance deposit allowance' of £3500 off the cars price, 10 days after taking teh agreement the £1k was paid back and switched to another loan. The £3500k was equivalent to a third of the price we were paying for the car.

If they can offer you a deposit allowance and teh terms are favourable, don't discount it just because it has a high APR and is from a finance/car company
