Help! In a muddle and can't pay bills

I would normally today withdraw money from my credit union account to put in my bank account to pay some bills. The credit union is closed and apparently won't be open till at least friday!

I have direct debits due out tomorrow plus no money for shopping trying not to panic but no idea what to do!

Cancel the direct debits that you can't pay then set them up again once you have the cash available.
These are my own views and you should seek advice from your local Benefits Department or CAB.

Thanks for all the replies. I don't possess anything worth pawning. No cash converter here (back end of nowhere).

However, I spoke to bank and they've agreed to cancel any charges incurred provided I put money in asap. I've called all the companies regarding the direct debits and they've said not to worry as long as they can get the payments one week to 10 days after first try all should be fine.

Had enough money to get bread and milk. Got enough in to do us for now.
  • would the bank not give you a small overdraft say £100?

Well done for talking to your bank, (in my experience it does take courage) when your Credit Union re-opens ask them to explain & cover any costs you've been landed with and see if there's a way of preventing it happening again. My CU has recently started on-line banking which has been so useful.

My credit union don't even have a website or Facebook page. They haven't even got a message on their phone saying when they're open! Correct me if I'm wrong but I'm thinking fb page and voicemail wouldn't cost them? I'm even considering offering to set up and administrate a fb page for them! It's a very poor area though so wondering if they're trying to avoid having too many customers??

Bank lady was lovely I embarrasses myself by bursting into tears. But at least it's mostly sorted. Raided the piggy bank (plus pulled apart sofa!) And found enough for bread milk and cheese. Luckily as I worry about money anyway I always try and have plenty tins in there's enough there to keep us going. Might be good practice for budget cuts!
