DRO & Getting Married

I am currently in my debt relief order after it was approved in February 2015 and I understand I will be discharged from Feb next year which would make it the 12 months. My income has not changed at all and I still earn from benefits a small amount of money so my monthly disposable income is still below £50.

I just wanted to ask that I am planning to get married soon within the period of the 12 months of the DRO and i wanted to know would me getting married change my circumstances because I don't believe it will as I am not earning any extra from my partner and my partner does not give me any money and my accounts and so on would still be separate from my partners. Basically I'm saying that my financial situation would not change for the better it would remain the same.

I would like some advice on this, many thanks :j

    Hi angelfromheaven

Short answer - no, this shouldn't affect your DRO as it is your personal financial circumstances that dictate your eligibility. Marrying will not in itself change anything - what matters is whether anything changes in financial terms and it appears not from your post.

It would be useful to know whether the make-up of your household will be changing in any way following the marriage? I.e. do the two of you already cohabit, or will one be moving in with the other after the wedding?

One very important thing to remember is that any wedding gifts you receive could be classed as assets, and if they are collectively worth over £300 your DRO could be revoked. One way to be on the safe side would be to stipulate a very strict "no gifts" policy.
