remortgaging without a building certifiacte

we bought a house nearly five years ago and somehow managed to get a mortgage even though the house did not have a architect certificate. The house was one year old at the time.
We are due to remortgage and now worried that that we will struggle to get suitable mortgage.
How old does a house have to be before an architect certificate is not required?
Is there any other form of certificate such as building survey that I can use instead?
