can she not scrape anything together?
could a family member lend her the cash?
Do the education authority not provide taxis for kids not on a bus route?

    Regrettably, that's a 'no' on all 3.

chip in and do the school run for a few weeks.

She can buy a £20 push bike to get to work on

After first months pay, she can buy a motor for 500 squid

Very Very worst that can happen is the car implodes and she has to buy another for 500 squid the next month.

I biked it to a new job for a year to sort out my finances, then I bought a mondeo for 550 and its sat in the car park outside now a year and a half later
    Hasn't missed a trick.

With all the best will in the world, you are going to make her problems worse than you already have by entertaining such stupid ideas as what you are suggesting.

I was thinking something similar. How far is the school run, how old are her kids and how far does she have to travel to work.
Cycling/walking might be an option, even if not ideal - and freecycle may well offer up a usable bike.

I remember [cure back-in-the-day music] when it was pretty standard for kids to walk 30-45 minutes to school, now it seems like a lot of people won't walk to the end of their road!

Of course, it might not be practical, but worth a thought.

You can buy a good enough run around on gumtree/ebay etc for around £1000 if you try. Don't get into more debt is my advice.

No one actually 'needs' a new car, they simply 'want' one, sad imo.
