Shoosmiths/Cabot Financial

Hi, I wonder if you could advise on the following. I am being chased by Shoosmiths for an outstanding debt to Cabot Financial. I am not aware of exactly what this debt is for and previously wrote to them to request information. Whilst I have not acknowledged the debt, I was previously in financial/debt problems and it is on my credit file so it is possible that the debt is genuine.
On my credit file, the default date was March 2010 so I understand that this should be removed from my file in March 2016.
My question is, if I make an offer of final settlement which is less than the due amount and this is updated on my credit file to partly settled, will the default date remain the same and come off my file in March 2016
Thank you
