Help needed personal trainer trying to gain clients

I'm not sure if this is in the correct forum or not but my friend is a personal trainer who works for a large corporate gym. He is trying to gain more clients to hit his targets but he is restricted with what he can do within the gym due to the red tape of the corporate company.

I was wondering if any of you lovely MSE people could come up with a few ideas of how he can gain more clients.

Any help would be greatly appreciated,

Many Thanks,
Loki x

Perhaps he could get on a local Facebook group for his area, put up posters/hand out leaflets etc for a one hour group FREE session - maybe if he could get 20 or so potential clients to come for a free 'taster' session, maybe a group circuit training hour or something it could bring in one or two clients? Even if not, word of mouth from 20+ might bring a bit of work in?

I think if he is really struggling, he will have to make allowances like that until he can build up a client base.

Can he offer introductory short sessions for free?

I had a personal trainer when I was getting fit for a particular event. The gym I went to offered a session for free and I had that and enjoyed it so signed up for one a week. Although I got a lot from it I stopped because the guy I saw was a bit slap dash, i.e. did not seem to take notes so never knew what we had done one week to the next so in the end I felt I was not progressing. I had learnt enough to keep going on my own. I probably would have kept it up if he had remembered crucial things like I had a knee problem so there were things (like weighted lunges) that I like to avoid, but had to keep reminding him.

Thanks guys this is a great help. He isn't allowed to promote himself as a personal trainer without the branding of the gym. He has started a facebook page and we're just struggling to come up with ways of promoting it because obviously his perspective clients need to also either be members of the gym or sign up to the gym before they even think about personal training with him.

We've spoken to the gym and I think that he is lucky to be allowed to have a facebook page. None of the other trainers do and I think they're a little uncertain whether the head office would approve but have let him trial it anyways.

The gym is reluctant to help him promote himself and we don't know how we can best advertise him without upsetting the gym.

Any other thoughts? Thanks for all the advice :-) x

I found my PT on Netmums and one of the reasons I chose them was because they stated that children could be brought to sessions (not to participate) so maybe advertising on there or going to local toddler/mum and baby groups to give talks or leaflets?

Could he offer a reward to current clients if they introduce a friend? A free session after the friend's 3rd session or something?

  • How much is he charging?

I was interested in a PT after a friend posted how much weight he'd lost by using a PT but the £30 per hour put me off

If he is advertising anywhere he should be upfront about his charges and exactly what he offers. I have been looking around for gym memberships and so many places don't advertise their prices. Assume new clients don't know how a personal trainer can help them, spell it out for them.
