I would like to lose just under a stone but not sure how

Yes there is! The shocking statistic is that most new bikes only ever do about 60 miles, and spend the rest of their life in a shed/garage. I bet if you ask around, someone or other - at work - or a relative/friend will have a bike kicking around somewhere that they're not using, and will happily lend you for a month or so while you see how you get on with it.
If you've got traffic free routes near you, you're very lucky - ask around, someone will give you the lend of one for a wee while. (That's how I got started - as part of a larger event I was enetering, I needed a racing bike. I'm not a drop handlebars type of girl, but an appeal at work meant a colleague lent me one while I prepared and did the event. That was three years ago. I haven't looked back since!)
Once you're hooked, then a nice bike that you'll like and use will become the best investment you've ever made. If you want great help and advice from the friendliest cycling forum in the whole universe, have a look at this one, and say hello with your own thread on the 'Welcome Mat' thread.

Ok, so I have just moved and had a left a pretty old and rusty hand me down at my last place. I'm going to go back as soon as I can and crossing my fingers it is still there. If not, I will go on to my family and friends. Whilst writing I just thought my sister has a broken bike at my mum's. I wonder if it can be fixed. I have checked out this area and they have two things, health and safety lessons, so I'm going to try those again. They also have quite few cycling groups for all levels so once I get a bike, hopefully I can do that. My OH has a bike which he says I can have but it's fixed gear and the idea of that petrifies the life out of me! I'll check out cycle chat tooThanks lovely x

I've lost just over a stone in just under 3 months. I am 5ft 7, and just after Easter had a shock when I weighed myself and was 10st 10, which is the heaviest I have ever been excluding my 2 pregnancies.
Basically I was snacking constantly, finishing up the kids meals, eating way too big portions of food myself and enjoying a bit too much wine through the week. Oh and not doing any exercise except running about after my kids.
I started running with a girl at work, and now go every other day and run between 4 and 5k, and both my OH and I have changed our diet.
I mde little changes that have really made a difference, such as stopping having sugar in my tea (took some getting used to!), and not nibbling on all the biscuits/doughnuts etc that people at work keep bringing in!
We also eat less carb-heavy meals at dinnertime, and smaller portions. We were just eating way too much. Also have cut out the wine mid week, which was becoming an unhealthy habit.
I am also drinking more water during the day, and making the most of the free fruit our office provides.
I have seen such a change in my body it's untrue. I am now 9st 9 and my old clothes fit me again, which I am very pleased about.
Remember that weight loss is 80% to do with the food/calories you eat, and 20% exercise. I don't deny myself anything, I still have a bit of chocolate if I want it, or a biscuit, but I try and limit myself and not scoff the whole packet!Metranil dreams of becoming a neon,You don't even take him seriously,How am I going to get to heaven?,When I'm just balanced so precariously..0 -
Oh and we try to limit booze to the weekends, although the odd drink in the week is fine.Metranil dreams of becoming a neon,You don't even take him seriously,How am I going to get to heaven?,When I'm just balanced so precariously..0

I'm definitely trying to amend the small things and things were shifting really well and then I went a short break and back to square 1, lol. It may just be water weight though, I don't know. I'm going to try various free things to I think, alongside my yoga. Maybe even walk a bit more, I've definitely not been walking as much as I use to of late. Well done on the weight loss too and I know that feeling of "my clothes don't feel tight anymore".0 -
Yeah it's easy to feel disheartened if you fall off the wagon for a few days. I've just had a very bad 4 days starting with my work summer party last Thursday. Far too much food and booze and then a weekend of more booze/BBQ's etc.
I have gained 2lbs apparently, but the best thing to do is not dwell on it, move on and start the week afresh. I have just been out for a 5.7k run in my lunch hour and had a soup and some fruit for lunch. Planning a salad with chicken for dinner tonight so I am back on it!
Just try and keep the momentum going, and if you slip up then just shrug it off and start againMetranil dreams of becoming a neon,You don't even take him seriously,How am I going to get to heaven?,When I'm just balanced so precariously..0 -
Last year I shed over 20kilos (over three stone or the weight limit for check-in luggage on many flights) or about 20% of my body weight. I describe this as the “ASSSS non-diet”:
- - No Alcohol
- - No snacks,
- - Nothing sweet (no sugar and no artificial sweeteners)
- + More sport, specially endurance sport and training (eg swimming, cycling etc) in excess of one hour per session.
- + More s… http://better-health-post.blogspot.co.uk/2015/07/healthy-weight-loss-bssss-non-diet.html
Losing weight can be costly, I now need a whole set of trousers, shirts and suits...0
