State Pension: NI Credits for Children up to 12

Options
Just after clarification about NI credits for years claiming Child Benefit. As I understand it you can claim NI credits up until the child is 12 if you claim Child Benefit.

What about this scenario? Say I worked full-time until my child was 12 (claiming Child Benefit for these years and paying NI) and then was unemployed for the next 12 years would I be entitled to 12 years or 24 years NI credit towards my state pension?

Thanks,

Aquamarina x

You would be recorded as having 12 years but as you would have paid ni for the same period you get no extra benefit. It does not carry forward

If you were unemployed after you child was 12 you would only get NI credits if you were unemployed and seeking work .

It is not as easy to get unemployed benefits as it used to be - probably made harder of transitioning from child care to employment which presumably requires a claim for UC rather than ESA or JSA these days?
