Looking for a new career - which jobs are not possible with previous BR?

So I lost my job earlier this year, and because of this I had to declare BR. I will be discharged in April next year.

I am looking for a complete career change, but have no degree and I'm nearly 29.

What careers are not possible post-BR/as a discharged bankrupt? I've heard that certain finance roles are almost impossible to work in due to having the BR marker previously.

Finding it very frustrating that certain finance roles are out of the question, I assume because they feel that going BR shows evidence of not being able to manage money well, but surely someone who has been BR has the experience and knowledge to manage their money better in future? I know I certainly will!

So, what will I not be able to train for? I'm thinking jobs that forbid anyone that has been BR previously OR jobs that are effectively impossible to work in due to having to declare previous BR etc?

Accounting?
Mortgage advisor?
Working in bank branches?
Auditing?

It's a shame that so many careers are out of bounds because of being BR, as a lot of the those careers don't require a degree and ideally I don't want to spend then next 3 years completing one to start earning money :undecided

Hi....why bother with the financial sector anyway?
No, I don't think all other drivers are idiots......but some are determined to change my mind.......

Can you study for a degree with the open university? The world's your oyster, loads to choose from outside of finance. If you can't do a degree they have shorter certificated courses.

    Hi,

I see from your other threads you are worried about an ipa as you start to earn.?

I'd suggest the degree route as your student loans are treated as untouchable by the or
  • A lot of financial roles will be out and also anything in insurance based on my experience. A lot of jobs where you are handling customer account/card details will also credit check you. It varies from company to company though. One of the perils of bankruptcy I'm afraid :(

I've looked into the OU and it's suprisingly limited the choice they offer. Either you have to already be employed full time in a role associated with the degree or they are degree that don't interest me/don't really bring any value to me. The only one that vaguely interests me is the BA(Hons) Business Management one.

Yes I've considered a degree and will happily do that for the right one. Unfortunately I didn't achieve the right A-Levels to go straight in, I would have to spend a year completing an Access course or re-do my A-Levels, by which point I will have been discharged and earning amounts/IPA won't be an issue.

Many careers/jobs with ok-ish prospects like accountancy or mortgage adviser etc don't require a 3 year+ degree, you can study for the certificates/qualifications in your own time at a fraction of the cost.

Just seems all of those are out of the question with BR!

    Thanks.

How long will this apply for? Until the BR marker is off my credit report? I am genuinely interested in working in this sector but it's so frustrating when because I have been bankrupt I'm completely ruled out.

Are there any finance sector jobs that it shouldn't be too much of a problem entering?

Every other career I've looked at either needs a big study commitment of 3/4 years whereas a lot of finance industry ones don't.

I'm running out of options

Ok let me try a different tactic - which careers ARE open to ex-bankrupts?

I'm finding it almost impossible to find any sort of career at the moment. I don't really want to be a bum working in low end retail stores for the rest of my life, I want a career I can be proud of.

A lot of people work hard in retail and no, they don't get paid much but that doesn't make them 'bums' ...a bit of respect please...Alan Sugar started out the bottom of the ladder in retail as a barrow bow in the east end I think...

There are actually very few careers that are affected by BR - its mainly the Police, public finance roles like ORs and the chartered accountancy work.

I have found the OU to be so full of degrees and choices its almost mind boggling! However, Economics and Accountancy are not included.
If you look for the 'Famous Bankrupts' post on this board you will just about every high profile entrepreneur on both sides of the Atlantic has managed to go BR at some point so its obviously not a barrier to making squllions of pounds (even when those sqillions have come from retail...)
Mortgage advice might not be so accessible to you but what about property investing.
