Joint Mortgage after separation

Apologises if this has been asked before.
I have a joint mortgage with my husband which is now only a year in. He has now decided to end the marriage and has agreed to leave the house. We don't have any children. I would like to take on the mortgage myself and, as the main earner of the two, think this should be ok. However, I don't know whether I need to buy him out or not. We've put in a new kitchen which still needs to be paid for and have done very little else to the house. I doubt there would be any equity and it has been suggested to me that selling now would leave us with a debt anyway.

I wonder if anyone has been in a similar situation or dealt with anything like this before and is able to offer me some suggestions going forward? Any help would be appreciated
