I do wonder who exactly was drinking this champagne, was it the whole entire country or a select few that maybe are not affected by austerity ?0

It's deff someonebut I dont imagine it being your average Greek, from what I have heard they are suffering quite badly, like many others in the world, maybe the tourists are saving a lot of money going there they can afford champagne?

As already stated, its tourists who are responsible for the rise in consumption.0

I think Syriza, and especially Tsipras and Varoufakis cracked open a fair few in January 'In nature, there are neither rewards nor punishments - there are Consequences.'0

Actually, no.
If you read that Telegraph report properly, you will find that whilst Greece was the world’s fastest growing market for champagne in 2014, it was not the only country whose consumption increased. Champagne consumption also increased in the US and Japan. And the UK as well. Just.

'Apparently' would be the thing. Some 'analyst' has offered that opinion. But I'm not so sure how you'd know one way or the other.
The key thing would be that Greek champagne market is only 300,000 litres a year. I'd guess that if a couple of shipping magnates got a good deal on some Veuve Clicquot and decided to restock their cellars, that could account for the increase.0 -
Perhaps the Greeks have finally realised that local produce like Retsina is just fermented Toilet Duck or Domestos.
I can't imagine they are blaming Brit Holidayers. We have only just mastered the lager can ring pull. A champagne cork would require skill and perseverence.0 -
Don't we usually need a link to claims such as those in the original post? Or do we just believe anything typed on the internet these days?0

You're putting me in a difficult spot here.
I want to believe in your post, but you haven't included a link to the claim in your post.
Perhaps you could edit and add a link back to itself?0
