Pre employment credit checks advice

Hi all,

My first post here :0))

I am up for a promotion soon and have found out if I go for it I will need to do a credit check.

I work in retail - in this particular job for 9years.

I have never had a good rating - don't actually know why!

I am confused as to what my employer will see! I have searched the internet and it gives conflicting information. Some say they can only see your public info and some say they can see everything down to the last detail.

I have credit card debt and loans. It's quite a bit at the moment due to personal reasons. However I have a 3 yr plan for it all to be paid off - sooner if I get this promotion.

I have no defaults, bankruptcy or ccjs. I have always paid my bills.

So can anyone shed any light on what they look at!? Don't want my employer knowing all my nitty gritty personal stuff!

Thanks
Grace

They are looking for financial distress which may mean you are going to be more prone to theft/ bribery etc

Having debt in itself isnt a problem as long as its well managed, ie in limits and paid on time. They are typically looking for defaults, CCJs, bankruptcy etc.

Never gotten to the bottom of exactly what they can see, most use external agencies to do these things rather than doing it in house. Not sure either if all companies can see the same thing, it could make sense that those in banking etc may have a deeper insight into the data than someone in retail etc.

Do a search using "obtaining credit report" and you will see ways of checking your current status and the reason for that status.
If promotion will mean you have control over large amounts of money your employer has a right to check for potential problems. A history of poor personal financial management may well make them think twice about putting somebody into a role like that.

    Hi Grace

If performing an employment check with a CRA, your employer will see public data (Electoral Roll, Bankruptcies/IVAs, CCJs) and number of defaults (not specific lender names or account types).

They will see this information for any current/previous addresses and current/previous names you provide them and depending on how much they're paying the CRA for the search, they may also see the information for any linked names or addresses on your report (including financial associations as a result of joint account).

The type of search being performed means that they are not entitled to see any specific data about your accounts or account performance.

Based on what you say in your original post, you should have nothing to worry about. Good luck with your promotion efforts .
