DIY low-lights on blonde hair?

Has anyone ever tried to do DIY low-lights on bleached hair?
I've always colour my own hair and 99.5% of the time it's fine but I have had a few dye disasters! I'm currently growing out a bad bleach job and managing to keep my roots as light as possible without bleaching but it's looking a bit 2-tone and when I colour my hair the bleached bottom half keeps going granny grey (thank god for lemons is all I can say)
So now doing my usual thing of wanting to go back towards my natural mousy blonde, but I thought it might be easier to have slightly darker low lights rather than dye the lot and risk it going orange again.
I did treat myself to a full head of highlights last year at an eye watering cost of £85 and it looked great for a week but it washed out so quickly and I couldn't justify going back to have it done again.
Any suggestions on how to tone it down a few shades or do I just need to wait until all the bleach has gone before attempting anything silly?

Rather than making a mess, I would look round for a cheaper hairdresser. Mine does cut,two colour foils and blow dry for £30 and makes a better job than some of the more expensive places.0

If you've got a hairdressing college near you, they'll do it for cheap if they're still in. Or I've used a Cellys before, which is a lot cheaper - they have their prices online.0

I mean, obviously if you can afford it then getting it done professionally would be the safest option. If not, then if you're trying to darken it rather than lighten it there's less room for disasters. You would need a colour deposit only dye, so you could go to a beauty supply place like Sallys where you could pick up a demi colour, or Nice and Easy 6-8 washes would cover it and there would be no damage. That's personally what I would do, I would find it easier to put a colour all over rather than try and do streak. No more goo hoarding!
