Is this Virgin Media's cable broadband service?
Or their ADSL service?
Belkin used to make dreadful routers, hence we'd advise people to avoid them.
Linksys used to make pretty good routers, but a few have been ropey of late, Netgear are becoming pretty good.
Netgear are the ones that xTelewest used to offer for free to certain customers (customers who phoned up and asked for a free router and agreed to jump to at least 4mbit broadband or stayed on 4mbit+ for another 12 months) and are the ones Virgin are supplying to their wireless trial customers.
I currently have a Linksys Wireless Router and not had any problems whatsoever with it as have others I know with them, however as Virgin are offering me for free their Netgear wireless router for being accepted on their trial (they were open to sign ups up until a week ago), it would have been silly not to accept it.
If you are on cable broadband then you need a cable router this connects to the modem Virgin supply. (You need both Virgin's modem and the router you buy).
If you are on ADSL broadband (broadband over the phone line). then you need an ADSL Modem/Router.

Are a couple of good places to look, occasionally PC World have some offers, usually trying to shift Belkin due to their poor track record - be aware with PC World they are only interested in shifting dodgy stock or stock that has a high mark-up.
Virgin themselves sell routers - though make sure you are buying the correct one for either ADSL or Cable. It's PAC not PAC Code, it's MAC not MAC Code, it's PIN not PIN Number, it's ATM not ATM Machine, it's LCD not LCD Display, it's DVD not DVD disc... It's no one not noone, It's a lot not alot, It's got not gotten... Panini is the plural of panino - there is no S!!(OK my English isn't great, the sciences, maths & IT are my strong points!)0
