Lean British or Irish beef large joint - Topside/Toprump/Silverside

Not as good as when asda do £4/kg, but worth a go. Never tried Sainburys before.

It might be worth trying... always assuming you are handy with a chainsaw for when you have to carve it.

Topside is rarely worth buying, in my experience. Too lean, too tough (however you cook it). The worst of all I've found has been from the terrible trio: Sainsbury's, Tesco and Asda. Morrison's meat is superior, but even then, topside is a risk.

Best to stick to rib on the bone - and the mortgage that goes with it.

We've never had a bad bit of beef from sainsbugs even though sometime some grisle in the middle but always very tasty.
(only ever buy it half price for the freezer)

I agree re sainsburys beef, buy when on offer and most of the time its gorgeous, especially if cooked slowly in stock in a covered dish.
(still tastes like roast beef though and goes with roast spuds!)

So, in other words, you braise it. Cooked that way it might possibly be edible - but it isn't roast beef.
