Two Together Railcard - buy train ticket now but railcard in August?

Options
We're planning a trip to London September 12th and if I buy rail tickets for me and my husband now could I buy the Two Together Railcard mid August?

If I bought the railcard today I would lose 3 months on it whereas not buying it until closer to the travel date would mean more chance to have a full years use of it.

Do I have to have a valid railcard at the time of purchase or just the date of travel? Hope someone can advise me.

You do not need a railcard to buy railcard discounted tickets.
However, you may have difficulties at a ticket office.

Buy your discounted tickets online but make sure you have the railcard before travelling.

Thanks for replying... I've been looking through the railcard's T&Cs but haven't found anything.

Buy them online and no-one will ever know. I have a card, buy all tickets online and there is no check until you travel.

the advice so far is correct, the key point is that you must have the railcard with you when you travel.
