Claiming back C/Card Charges if paying reduced amount

Hi there
I am thinking of writing to Lloyds TSB trustcard and Barclaycard to ask for all the excessive charges over the last six years. However, I am currently paying a reduced agreed amount and they have stopped the interest.

I only want to claim the amounts so I can reduce the balance on the credit cards.

Has anyone tried this or do you think they will ask for the balance on the credit card if they award the charges ?

We are in so much debt at the moment and need all the help we can get.

Are either of them linked to bank accounts? Sometimes if you win back charges they can close your account.... if not I think you can claim them back even if you're on reduced payments. Hopefully someone more knwoledgeable will be along soon though.

This is something which has crossed my mind as well, I am on reduced payments with all my Creditcards and I didn't want to persue anything like claiming charges back as I thought they might reinstate my interest and make me pay the full amount as its only an informal arrangment.

Thanks for your reply. They are not linked to my bank account, although I have an account with TSB but they never closed the account when I won over £1k :j . Do you think they could close this ??

Any help on this would be really appreciated as I want to clear my debts, really getting me down.

be careful if you have a bank account with lloyds... somewhere in their terms and conditions I'm sure it says they can use any money in a bank account to pay any outstanding debt to them without warning!

Glad i am not the only one to think of this. Also wondered that if the balance has been sold onto a DCA then does that mean could possibly claim back all charges from original credit card companies?

Yes it is right about lloyds...they can take anything out of your accounts with them if you owe and their credit cards. However one of their guys (on the quiet said) to credit the account with some ridiculous amount each month (you know 10p) and it keeps it open if ever you need one. They probably wouldnt bother taking a measly 10p to pay off your credit card. He said he was appalled they could do this but that was the rules Llloyds apply....

    Thank you for your feedback.

Has anyone actually tried to claim or asked the credit card companies ?

  • Yes you can claim these fees back, HOWEVER.

    1) If your on a reduced payment plan, it could reduce the balance enough for them to start adding interest again, using the arguement "you can afford it now"

    2) If your debt is with a 3rd party - ie DCA - then most companies will inform the DCA and get them to reduce the debt accordingly, some will just send the customer a cheque - MBNA do this.
