I have a very old oil-fired boiler which is so uneconomical and unreliable that I have not used it for 3 or 4 years. I have been thinking of replacing it and getting a grant to do so. However, I do not have many funds at the minute and the cost, even with the grant might be beyond me. What would be the typical cost of supply and installation and what grant would I get?

The grant seems to be quite generous. I think that it is up to something over £1000, but is that just for the larger boilers? What would the typical cost be for net of the grant, ie. cost incl. VAT minus grant? I do not have a large house.

Would this scheme be any use to you Mistral?

Once you meet the criteria set out there the HE/DSD pay for the work.

    A very helpful link. Thanks.

I do not qualify for it as I am not over 65 nor do I have any children living in the house.

Our boiler replacement cost £2000, that was the cheapest and we had 6 different quotes. We had a new oil fired boiler fitted, with controls so we can heat the water via the oil but without heating the radiators when we want to.

The grant is based on your gross income, we got £500 paid off ours. It would have been around £1000 if they had based the grant on our nett income instead.

How long does it take from applying for the grant until you would receive the grant or have the work completed?

Are there any grants or financial assistance for people who have a total gross annual household income of less than £20,000 to purchase a front or back door?

It is not just your income that counts apparently. For boiler replacement you have to meet other criteria as well. According to the link given by Mollyb above:

"Boiler replacement/system upgrade for householders over 65, or who have a child under 16 years of age, or who receive disability living allowance and where an existing central heating boiler is at least 15 years old;"

Joe have a look at the link I posted above about the Affordable Warmth Scheme. It not only looks at boiler upgrades but also cavity and roofspace insulation, draughtproofing and replacement windows (not 100% sure about doors though). If you contact the Council they could give you more advice on whether a replacement door would be considered.
