Keep or cancel...?

My AA membership is up for renewal on the 7th Sept.. have called up today and and because I've been with them 4 yrs (last car was an M reg and regularly broke down..) they can change the cover to just the car so it's the car covered and not just me which would be handy as Ste has now passed his test.. and they can do that for £34.....
But.... the car hasn't given us any trouble yet. It's an 03 reg and has only done 24k miles. It's just gone through it's mot with just a fog light switch and wiper blades failing with no amber notices or anything....

so the question is... to renew or not to renew?

I always have cover just in case. My ex cancelled his and then had a puncture. As he's been in Iraq his spare was flat. It cost him £150 to be towed somewhere (that's from memory so may not be right!)

And £34 over the year isn't much really.

    Morning AI,

Did you see Martins loophole in last weeks email regarding AA membership for £5? I didnt do it myself as I dont drive but maybe it would worth having a look to see if your eligable?

I would be wary of not having any cover esp wit hthe Kids in tow. If you do breakdown then it will cost you more in the long run....

I've just cancelled mine with the AA, and used Quidco.com to shop for a new policy from the RAC. Got a decent recovery service covering me in any vehicle, and £25 cashback!

If you take a basic package, you might not get £25, but it's all money, right?

Go through quidco - with the cash back it works out at net cost of £5!

  • Right I'm going to cancel mine but have done a new one through quidco so we'll get £25 cashback... PLUS it was cheaper online (£33.60) and it's in Ste's now but the vehicle is covered not just him. So once we get the cashback we'll have had our AA cover for £8.60.
    Bargain!

    Thanks guys!! :D

I personally would have it, its not always the reliability of the car, the most common reasons the AA are called out are,
    - ran out of petrol
    - flat battery
    - flat tyre
These things can happen on the most reliable of cars.
I have called them twice this year and neither time was to do with the reliability of the car, the first time the battery sparked out, the 2nd I needed towing off the motorway after the floods made the car cut out.
You can reduce cover price by not getting homestart, get your partner on the same policy too - cheaper than 2 separate policies. They only charge us £20 extra for partner putting on.

I always think it's worthwhile having cover just in case and doing it via the cashback sites is a fantastic way of getting it for practically nothing!

    Hi there

I have a 53 reg Rover 25 with 23k miles on the clock and so far this year its had to be carted off because the immoboliser got stuck on and then the electric window stuck down in torrential rain, so again another recovery.. two in less than 2 weeks on what I would consider a newish car.

Renew cos you never know when your car will leave you stranded!!
