Can anyone tell me if I can serve court notice/papers to a Registered Company in the UK by Registered Mail? Or do I have to hand them over/serve them personally?

This is perhaps general advice about service for England and Wales claims.
You could serve them by email, especially if its to a generic address that sends out automatic acknowledgments (to prove it was delivered). Otherwise, email a number of named individuals at the weekend and you may get an out of office vacation response.
One final possibility if its a service company, you could use www.resolver.co.uk as most companies I've complained about have an attach document option associated so you can upload your form to go with the email resolver sends.
Problem with this is some solicitors moan about not accepting certain methods of service, (such as email) even thought they know full well they have in the past and they'’ve clearly been using email for 20 years+.0
