Blocked ear wax

What's the best over the counter remedy to clear blocked ear wax.

No pain, no infection (have had both)

I'm sure my GP mentioned "Olive oil" couldn't hear clearly.

    Oxtex ear drops, from supermarket/chemist

but yes, you can use olive oil and a dropper (if you have one). if not you can buy it like the Otex. I found it in Home Bargains.

If you heat olive oil up a little and pour in.

A few months ago, I went to my GP, having lost almost all the hearing in one ear for over a week, concerned as I had had three infections within a year and could not find any wax to clean out.

He said that I did in fact have wax, too deep seated to be cleaned normally, so gave me 'fizzy drops' to try (6 times a day), to be followed by syringing if this didn't work.

I was amazed to find that the drops, which did work, were in fact a mild solution of sodium bicarbonate and was glad I didn't have to pay £8.20 for such a minor item . (I'm 66).

You can buy a 'dropper' bottle cheaply from a pharmacy, and just use ordinary olive oil.

I've used cerumol (peanut oil version, purple packaging) successfully a few times now. Put tons in over 3 days then get your surgery to syringe them. £3 well spent if you're suffering.

There is a trend at GP surgeries to say 'we don't use a syringe'. In the past that's been the only thing that worked on mine, and the relief was instant and dramatic!

But yYou need to have a practice nurse who knows what they're doing

Sodium bicarbonate or olive oil drops

And most definitely, no use of cotton buds! All that serves to do is leave fibres of cotton wool in your ear and push the wax deeper down onto your eardrum

Sodium bicarbonate ear drops always shift it - you buy them with a dropper from the chemist

I've got an appointment tomorrow to have my ears stringed, i was really worried a couple of weeks ago 'cos i could hardly hear a thing. My Gp gave me 'sodium bicarbonate' drops but the girl in the chemist took them from the counter, and i've used olive oil. Everything is fine now, but the appointment is booked so i'll go and it might be even better.

I would recommend the sodium bicarbonate drops as well. I had a period of a few months where they were trying to syringe my ears but the wax was too impacted. During this time I tried Otex, cerumol, something the doc prescribed and then the sodium bicarbonate, after the others didn't work.

They recommended I put an old towel over my pillow and use them before I went to bed. I did this and woke up the next morning with a puddle of wax on the towel. Completely unblocked and pain free! Sorry if that's too yucky, but it literally was the only thing that worked.
