Online Surveys & Benefits

ok so I currently work part-time and claim housing benefits and working tax, I have completed many online surveys and over time I have earned many gift vouchers and rewards to spend online, this time I have earned a one time cheque for £50 I know its not a lot but if I cash it into my bank would this effect my benefits in anyway, i don't really want all the messing about of setting up a new claim to declare a one off payment of £50 witch will take weeks for them to sort (not to mention they will stop my housing benefits and working tax while the claim is processed) for the sake of £50, i'm not sure if to bother or not

Possibly better to ask at benefit section. This was discussed before but couldn't find the thread but answer could be yes.

It's a bit of a grey area. You are being rewarded and survey sites often state reward or gift. You are not working for the site, it is not a job. However, some people do say it should be declared. People seem to have been told different things by HMRC (there have been topics on these forums before about it) A lot do surveys without declaring them.

If you mention it, ask them about it rather than telling them. If you say "I've earnt £50" they'll think you've got a job and it'll cause all types of stupid/pointless questions on working and the hassle of things changing with your benefits. So you need to word it right and make sure they understand that it was a reward from a survey site and not that you have earnt money from a job. Then it's up to the benefits advisor to decide what should happen, if anything.
