I take my husband with me to help.
By the way everyone should get a eye sight test at least every two years.Lost my soulmate so life is empty.
I can bear pain myself, he said softly, but I couldna bear yours. That would take more strength than I have -

This German cartoon is drawn from the husband's point of view, when he and his wife go to collect his new glasses:

I find it really hard to choose glasses. I have the type of face that doesn't suit anything - hats or glasses. I wear contact lenses most of the time - also very useful for being able to see myself in frames. ...but I am always disappointed with my glasses. I have a narrow face and specifically asked for narrow frames, but they came back wider than the previous ones. I think it's poor that the optician cannot tell me how thick my lenses will be at the edges (wouldn't mind if I had to wait for the info - if only they could at least calculate it for me).
Glad you didn't need to get any new ones this time, OP!0 -
I never choose mine at the time of my eye test. In fact ,nowadays, I buy from Asda, who include light lenses tints etc at no extra charge (I bought four pairs for the price of two at Specsavers and got light lenses on all, instead of sharing a pair of light ones with two frames), but have my eye tests at Specsavers or Boots because I need retinopathy tests which Asda can't do.0

Have you noticed virtually all of the frames are heavy and dark/colourful these days? I prefer lighter frames and they are really hard to come by!0

I bought these recently and I'm delighted with them.
I only need glasses for driving/tv so I'd dithered for years wearing a horrid pair of granny glasses because I was afraid to make an expensive mistake. I decided that these wouldn't break the bank even if I wore them for a while and then found some designer ones that I really loved.
These are the ones I'd been fancying but couldn't make up my mind.

The last pair I bought were the ones recommended by the assistant and I wished I hadn't so I don't have a lot of faith. I would like some that flatter me, and I really wouldn't have a clue what is modern and what isn't. To me the ones the girl was wearing were heavy great things like my grandfather used to wear and they're presumably modern so wouldn't make me feel good one little bit. The others she showed me that were 'designer' had a dame edna look about them I'm sure!
I've looked on a couple of websites and see you can get several to try out at home and as missbiggles1 suggests, I might give that idea a shot. I'll still just look like me in glasses whichever I go for, so it probably doesn't matter.
Can anyone recommend an online supplier above another?
Thanks
DS
I've been very happy with both of these.

Last time I went with what the woman in the opticians recommended but I hated them from day 2! However I tend to have the attitude that you can get used to anything in life and eventually I did - after all I don't have to look at myself much! Also back then there didn't seem to be the choice online either, as those from the opticians are so expensive and I don't want to spend a lot of money on a mistake again. All the frames I've tried just look like me in glasses, no difference between them.
I'm a practical granny, wear jeans/cords and jumpers most of the time, not glamorous at all, just aim for a neat and tidy look. So would want glasses the same. I've looked at all the stuff about face shape and considered taking my daughter along to help choose but it's not really fair to give someone else that responsibility.
So how do YOU choose?
DS
I have a time trying to choose new glasses too- about 5 years ago I seriously took about 6 months of randomly visiting different opticians trying to find what I felt worked best. it didn't help that I cannot see anything without my glasses unless I squint (and then have a messed up face when I am trying to view things) or that I seem to blink in every single picture taken of me and opticians pictures were no different. I looked terrible (one random eye half opened the other shut) and the with different glasses to compare...waste of everyone's time!
I ended up with a pair which I thought looked OK...til I got them back and realised they were way too big for my face. I had to live with them, they weren't a terrible choice but I was so glad when they were broken that I had insurance!
I took a gamble last time; went with a big rimmed pair, I have always wanted rimless tbh but my lenses are too fat (even when slimmed down as much as possible) and one lense is different to the other so they were also wonky. I went to the other extreme and expected things to look very different and feel very odd to begin with.
I now am pleased with the frames I had. I feel like I've grown into them rather then straight away liking them and getting bored with them. I think if I had the same choice again I'd have done the same thing.
I think when I pick out a new set of frames when I do get tired of the current pair or they are worn to the point where they are unwearable; I will take the same mentality again; try something new. Look for something which doesn't look terrible but pushes your comfort zone. It adds to things and gives you the opportunity to look different and as long as you walk with pride you will find people tend to compliment you rather than say anything negative.0 -
I have been wearing glasses for nearly 25 years now. I am shortsighted.
First of all I would describe shape of your face and pick the shape of glasses according to that. Most people have oval face.
Than the tone of your skin and eyes. If you are blonde with blue eyes (summer type) the best colour of frames for you will be grey, pink, blue/navy/turquise. If you are ginger (spring type) - olive, browns, red. Autumn - dark/brown hair, brown eyes and dark skin - burgundy , browns, gold frames, winter type - black/very dark hair, green/blue/grey eyes and pale skin - silver, red, navy blue frames.
Style - it is up to you. Depends what you wear every day and what you feel most comfortable with.
Example: I have oval face so I picked shape of glasses for it. I am summer type - blonde hair, blue eyes, fair skin and eyebrows - colour of frame: Pink and grey. Style - I picked thick frames this time - for a change. People say my frames suit me and i also like my glasses.
I usually change glasses every 2-3 years. Normally, in the shop, I narrow my glasses hunting down to 3 frames and choose one of them. Usually it takes me ages , at least half an hour.
If you are short sighted it is good idea to choose second pair as sunglasses, if there is offer 2 pairs for the price of 1. They are brilliant for sunny days and holidays.0 -
Go to the opticians when they're busy, decline help and watch the staff. Every opticians has someone who is brutally honest with frame styling, it's usually fairly obvious as they will be picking frames up to put on the customers face, looking for different colours of the same frame and will be generally putting people off styles that don't suit. Approach that person directly and ask for help.0
