Mortgage process started...

On Friday we had an offer accepted on a property. I provided broker with docs yesterday and mortgage application was submitted. Broker said we passed the initial credit check. This afternoon Halifax asked for further documentation relating to a mortgage we currently have with them for a rental property. Sent bank statement showing rent and tenancy agreement. Halifax will need a reference from employer as new employment so broker contacted them to send this directly to Halifax. Paid valuation fee.

What are the next steps? Is there a timescale or is it how long is a piece of string? What kind of issues could throw a spanner in the works at this stage?
