Have you re-applied successfully?

Interested to know if any of you have re-applied to an old creditor that was included on your bankruptcy petition. If so what was the outcome?
I came into this world with nothing and I'm gonna leave with nothing.

  • Yes. Barclaycard said yes, American Express and First Direct said no; Amex for a credit card and FD to a new current account. Oddly, HSBC, who own First Direct, said yes to a credit card, with a pretty high limit. Obviously FD and HSBC are not so closely linked as they appear.

how long after discharge did you reapply?

A month after everything had dropped off my credit reports (i.e. six years from date of bankruptcy).

My understanding is that Amex are totally unforgiving and that First Direct are similar. I don't think that other providers are quite so strict though.

During the six year period, I had credit cards with Vanquis and Aqua, neither of which were former creditors. I paid the cards off, in full, every month. I obtained the Vanquis after my bankruptcy had been discharged (i.e. one year from date of BR) and the Aqua one a few months after that, so that by the time the six years were up, I had a fairly lengthy 'positive' credit history.

Amex, etc, also have other strict criteria..including, whether one is a high flying earner? :(

So refusal from them isn't anything to be concerned about, eh?
No, I don't think all other drivers are idiots......but some are determined to change my mind.......

Not sure about the 'high flying earner' bit; I certainly wasn't :o but do now earn quite a bit more than the national average. I wasn't too bothered anyway, as I simply got the MBNA Amex card.

I travel quite a bit, so was looking for one of each of the brands, plus a back-up card for Visa and Mastercard, in the event that one or more didn't work. The latter has happened a couple of times, both times when a credit card was required (i.e. car hire deposit) and car rental was essential.

So long as you're past the six years, have established a new positive credit history and your credit report is clear, you should be fine with obtaining a new, prime card. Certainly, based upon my experience, this has been the case, with MBNA, Lloyds, Halifax, HSBC and Barclaycard all saying yes and all with decent limits, not that I will be taking advantage of the latter :D.

Barclaycard were a creditor of mine, I went BR in 2010 and applied late last year and was accepted. Have just had the limit increased for the first time on the card too.

I have since re applied to barclaycard, without success. The reason they gave was because i had owed them money in the past, in their letter. This has been weel past my bankruptcy (over 6 years) with no records of barclaycard on my files.
