Advice Needed on Leaving Job

I've decided to leave y current job, I've only been here 6 weeks but I'm not happy. I'm being asked to do things I'm not comfortable with that weren't in my contract, and the owner of the company is really unpleasant.

I've been advised he has a history of not paying people who leave, I can't afford to risk this happening or face legal action to claim my pay. My partner is pregnant and we don't need the stress.

The only thing I can think to do is wait until Payday and walk out. I'd really rather not, but I think if I hand my notice in now (2 week period) I'm pretty sure I'll be told to get out and then not paid for the work I have done.

I probably need to speak to the CAB bit wondered if anyone here had any useful advice?

If you really need the money then you should find another job before leaving this one.

Unless the requests that make you feel 'uncomfortable' are illegal or immoral, you need to stick it out.

How much more stressful will it be for your GF to have you unemployed? Especially when the DWP are likely to sanction you for making yourself unemployed.

From now on, spend as little money as possible to build a safety net and then move jobs.

You need to be very careful doing this for two reasons...

Firstly you need to be sure the money has been in your account long enough that it can't be called back. This is complex and can be longer than some people realise. Maybe ask on the banking board about this and / or check with your bank.

Secondly, be aware that although it is very unlikely, if you fail to give you contracted notice (or one week if nothing is specified) you would be in breach of contract and the firm may be able to make a claim against you for any unavoidable losses this causes.

As I say it is rare and they would actually have to have suffered a quantifiable loss over and above the saving on your wages.

Obviously you will also be giving up any chance of a decent reference!

The requests are both immoral and illegal, I'm already in the process of reporting them for fraud as it happens.

I'm going self employed after this, I want the money owed because I've earned it and won't be another victim of this guys greed.

I'm not bothered about the reference, I haven't been there long and have other former employers to fall back on if the need arises.
