  • Thanks Conor,

However, I've done my research, and the law does allow for 11 hours between the end of one shift and the beginning of one another. Employee Relations at Starbucks confirmed this over the phone but unfortunately they refused to in writing, presumably because they knew I would nail the manager with it.

    http://www.dti.gov.uk/employment/employment-legislation/employment-guidance/page28979.html

"A worker is entitled to a rest period of 11 uninterrupted hours between each working day"

For example, he would have me work 12:30 - 20:30 one day, followed by 05:30 - 13:30 the next. I would almost be falling asleep at work, and when you're dealing with boiling water, steam, etc on a regular basis its very dodgy indeed.

Whereabouts in the country are you? In Wales there are lots of good employment initiatives, and there may be other regional ones elsewhere?

Are you near a football club? The new season has sarted and there maybe opportunities to work in catering etc.
  • hi wyebird, i'm in manchester, thanks for the idea but both united and city are really oversubscribed for people wanting catering/hospitality/stewarding work and unfortunately i didn't get my foot in the door early enough.

i am on the waiting list though :)
  • hello Pennyless wonder :j

i was in this position last year and wanted to find the nearest cliff...
BUT i didnt, and look at me now, lol.

anyway, have you tried temping agencies like office angels, Adecco and Hays? if you just elaborate a little, you should be able to find office temping (assuming you can answer a phone, work a computer and make tea!). but you have to call them EVERY SINGLE DAY and make your recruitment agent your new best friend!

i was despised by mine at the end of it, but i got lots of work so i would leave them alone! also, could you tutor in anything like music, IT, languages or any subjects you have school/uni qualifications in? there are loads of places to advertise for free and you can make £25 an hour.

another place people i know have got work is through the universitys doing admin over the summer...

    good luck! :T

What I've always done when really desperate for a job is sign up with the agencies that provide factory workers - the pay is awful & the job mind-numbingly dull at times, but they used to minibus us up to the factory and cos the pay is weekly you'll start getting the dosh in v.quickly.

Do check out the website www.entitledto.co.uk as even though you can't get jobseekers as you resigned I though you could claim income support?
