how much do lenders look at partners credit report?

Hi all,

Just a quick question. We are in the process of buying our first house. We checked our credit reports on Experian prior to seeing a brooker. All looked fine until we were rejected at the AIP stage. Confused we looked at the reports on Noodle and discovered my wife received a CCJ last September without her knowing. We are looking into that now but not sure how successful our appeal will be.

So we have decided to apply just in my name. I have been accepted this time at the AIP stage and am due to go in to put full application in tomorrow as have found a house. My question is how much will the lender look at my wife record as we show as connected on experian?

Thanks in advance for any feedback,
Matt.

  • My understanding is that if you have a financial association on your credit file then it will be looked at. Since you are married, I'm assuming this is the case. I'd be quite concerned that a CCJ was served 'without your wife knowing' and ensure it's corrected if it was in error before applying. If it was valid and correct, consult a broker when considering which lender to apply to as they will know how it is likely to affect your application with that particular lender.

Your wife will be linked to you financially and this can affect your credit score with some Lenders even if she is not applying.
