Diets...arghh!!

Options
I followed sw for approx 20yrs, lost 2st 3 times (twice after after having the kids). My mum got ill then died 3yrs ago and ever since her initial diagnosis and death i have gradually put weight on. I did sw but myself (i did go back to meetings but as i used to go with my mum and people kept asking about her i found it really upsetting)

I joined ww at home 3mths ago, determined to lose at least a stome by her anniversary which was 31may.....was doing well until i hurt my knee and was off work for 6wks and still can not do much walking despite going back to work.

I have a holiday booked for 7wks time......i need to be at least 8lb lighter if not more! Is this more doable with sw or ww? I'm a fAddy eater with dairy intolerance so dont eat yoghurts, hate fruit, only eat greenbeans and mushrooms for veg. I like plain food....i can find things to eat on both plans, but which will work best??

Sorry to ask so many questions. People at work all go to exercise classes which i can not do (and have no childcare for anyhow), Nd they are losing so much weight. X

Having only just started SW I cant really say much about the diet itself (1st WI tonight so I'm not sure how good it will be in the long run, etc). I have tried WW 3 times and didnt lose any weight at all - however that isnt necessarily true for you.

The main thing is that I would say stick to what you know. If you know you CAN lose weight with SW then go back to that. If you cannot face going back to the same group - where many of the people going at the same time as you might have moved on - then it might be better to change groups or sign up to lose weight online.

I'd recommend joining myfitnesspal, and logging everything you eat. It will be able to tell you how much you can eat everyday to lose the weight you want and you'll also be able to see where you've been going wrong with diet in the past.
As for whether it's possible to lose 8lb's in 7 weeks, that depends on what you weigh now and how much you have to lose altogether. I'm always sceptical when people say they don't like fruit and veg, there are so many different types you can't possibly dislike them all, just need to try different things and cook them in different ways.
  • Why do you need to be 8 pounds lighter? Its the quick fixes that don't help. Of course its doable but weight loss isnt everything. Inch loss matters as well. Its possible to drop inches without losing much weight at all. Your limited diet won't help I think, you say you hate fruit? I find it very hard to believe with such a choice out there that there's not one or two fruits you couldn't tolerate.

If walking is a problem just now, swimming is an option, you dont need to put weight on your ankle to get active. In fact if you bought some weights or a kettlebell there are tons of exercises you could do at home sitting down. And when you get better, injury wise there's tons of stuff on youtube you could follow.

You can still eat yogurt with a dairy intolerance, you can get soya yogurt and Im sure there are other kinds of dairy free yogurts as well.

If plain food is your thing its your thing, but Im pretty sure there are more fruits and veg you could sneak into your eating plan in different ways. Variety is the key to not coming unstuck and particularly on the SW plan I think you would struggle as they place so much emphasis on eating fruit and veg.

I would be suggesting the 5:2 diet. I've lost about 1lb per week. I find it very doable as you just calorie count for 2 days (500 those days) the other days you eat normally without really stuffing yourself. It's the first diet that has really worked for me (and I have tried loads) because you can say to yourself "I will eat that 'whatever' tomorrow. the thing is the body doesn't get into "starvation" mode. Worth a try. I bought the book from Amazon- bought 2 actually- one is more of a recipe book but I've found a daily menu I like and I stick with it- those days broccoli, carrot or mushroom and cucumber. I put the "recipe" on the 5:2 thread just a couple of days ago.
    Good luck.
On this you wouldn't be wanting fruit on those 2 days- too much sugar. All kinds of berries are great. On normal days I eat quite a lot of soya yoghurt- the plain variety, or the new Alpro almond or coconut

Have you heard the saying 'if you always do what you've always done, you'll always get what you always got?

Maybe it's time to try new things? Everyone has the odd genuine dislike of certain foods - for me it's celery, kiwi fruit, and trifle. More of a visual, textural thing than taste. However, I know that if I did eat these things, nothing terrible would happen, I just wouldn't have had a very enjoyable meal that day!! There's a world of food out there, I don't get why hardly any of it appeals to you, to at least try it. What sort of things do you make for your kids to eat?

It always makes me ponder when I watch these fussy eater programmes - the people that 'only' eat chips (apparently) for every meal - yet strangely, none of them seem to have an overwhelming aversion to things like chocolate or alcohol, only healthy foods. Now is that nature or nurture?

I'm not trying to be nasty, I'm hugely overweight and have been on many different diets, but have been doing WW this time and have lost very nearly 3st in 22 weeks, it's not been any great hardship, it's taught me a lot about portion control and that I don't need to reward/console myself with food. I lost 6lbs in the first week, so 8lbs is achievable in 7 weeks but I feel you need to find some positivity and drive from somewhere for it to work well for you this time.

If you have netflix watch 'fat, sick and nearly dead', 'Food Matters' and 'Fed-Up' and see hwo you feel.

Stick to plant based food, its the best option.

    Hi
It is possible to do exercise with very bad knees.
I am waiting for a knee replacement but have been encouraged to exercise because the less weight on my knees the better.

But you cannot just go to a class where there might be loads of squats and lunges that you cannot do.
Most personal trainers will write you a program after an assessment for about £25.

Things you can do with bad knees for example (but be advised by a professional for your circumstances)

    Sit ups
    Russian twists
Glute exercises on all fours- eg leg extensions
    Plank
    Tricep and bicep work
    Dead lifts

It would be better to be getting in the habit of doing some regular exercise rather than just saying " I cannot do that because I have bad knees"
