Article on German RE generation beating FF's in 2020, leading me to find a factsheet from late Dec which made for interesting viewing as it shows that lignite is finally 'taking a kickin' the last couple of years (graphs 3 & 4).
German renewables power to energy mix gold
German renewables have for the first time produced more electricity than all fossil fuels in a full year, according to new figures.
The Fraunhofer Institute found green power hit 183 terawatt-hours in 2020, outstripping the 178TWh from lignite, coal, oil and gas.Germany’s energy consumption and power mix in charts

Seek and you shall find so the saying goes and it would appear that scientists from down under have done as such in identifying the vast number of sites and potential storage capacity globally.I wonder how many are actually feasible or cost effective but suspect even a small perentage of that number would make a useful contribution to future energy needs.
Database lists 616,818 global sites for sustainable pumped hydro
Scientists from the Australian National University (ANU) have identified 616,818 locations worldwide that could be suitable for 23.1 million GWh of pumped-hydro storage capacity.
The sites relate exclusively to closed-loop pumped-hydro energy storage projects with little environmental impact due to their location away from rivers. The sites can be found through an open-source online platform managed by the Australian government.
The locations all are at altitudes less than 100 m above sea level and have sufficient height differences to enable potential energy storage between two water reservoirs.

Seeing the reference to pumped storage made me think of SSE's Coire Glas scheme which will become more financially sustainable if the current events occur more often : https://www.theguardian.com/business/2021/jan/05/cold-snap-sees-uk-electricity-market-prices-reach-new-high

I'd expect in the coming years to be a variable amount... which may not suit those who will export the vast majority in summer when the demand will be lower.
However it could improve the maths for batteriesWest central Scotland

Ahh yeah, forgot about the agile export, the lad who does the stats site talked about that before, and I had thought the same as you, low import, v high export, bit I'm sure their is a cap on export which makes the calculation a pretty much no chance of actually making money on it.
