Tax on kids uniform

Can anyone tell me why I am expected to pay tax on my child's school uniform?
I was under the impression that children were exempt and Ive ordered from an official
Uniform supplier.
If I'm not exempt the tax then can I claim a rebate as I wash and iron all my sons uniform at home and it's something that is compulsory for him to wear?

Children's clothes are zero rated for VAT up to a certain size. Since children have been getting bigger each generation and the size is not increased in line with this inflation in the budget effectively means that a lot of children are suffering VAT on their clothing.
Is it any more unjust than VAT being charged on some food?
If you disagree you should see your MP or emigrate.

It's not income tax that is being charged - it's VAT so you cannot claim a rebate for VAT.

Your son, however, could possibly claim an income tax rebate for his uniform washing but as he probably doesn't pay income tax there's probably not much point.

Should be Zero rated according to this

    https://www.gov.uk/government/publications/vat-notice-714-zero-rating-young-childrens-clothing-and-footwear/vat-notice-714-zero-rating-young-childrens-clothing-and-footwear#items-suitable-only-for-young-children

However, if you supply garments under a specific agreement with a school catering exclusively for pupils under 14 years of age you may be able to apply the zero rate beyond the garment measurements in paragraph 4.2.
The garments must be unique to that school by design, such as a prominent badge or piping in school colours, and held out for sale as being for that school only. If these conditions are met, you may apply the zero rate irrespective of garment size.
The same principles apply to clothing items which form the uniform of other children’s organisations catering exclusively for the under 14s, such as Beavers and Brownies.
These may be zero rated irrespective of size provided they’re:
    • designed exclusively for the organisation
    • worn only by under 14s
    • clearly identifiable to the organisation

    snip..

    [*]worn only by under 14s

The Op doesn't mention the child's age though - he could be over age 14.
