The new employer will have access to the information from the employee's P45.

All that will show is the total paid across a given period; as far as the new employer is concerned OP could have received a pay rise towards the latter end of the period.

  • I always exaggerate my salary too, though usually by a couple of grand rather than 4K.

I agree with what the above poster says, they will only find out what you have earned so far this year and you can just say you had a pay rise if they question it.

When I took my first job in the line of work I do now, I was honest about my salary in my basic admin job and ended up being offered peanuts, but just enough for changing jobs to be worth my while.

I could have exaggerated by a grand or 2, and basically I was unhappy the whole time I was there mainly because of the rubbish salary and no prospect for a decent raise.

The reality is we aren't entirely honest when it comes to finding new jobs. For many people the reason why they want a new job is mainly for more money, but how many people give that as the reason when asked at an interview?

my employer would put down what I was paid on a reference if asked. I do when asked to give references, it's not a trade secret.....

presumably you have already negotiated the new salary when accepting the post?

Your salary has no bearing on your ability to do your job, so from that point of view it's irrelevant. However, if your new employer thinks you are not trustworthy then that's a different matter.

Your ex-employer won't disclose your salary directly but your P45 will give them an idea, but you can either say you were mistaken or you got a pay rise recently. But I would try to be as honest as possible.

Just be consistent. Put on the form what you said in the interview.

If questioned (and you won't be), just say you included benefits such as Gym, Dental, Private Health Care and Pension.

Could it be that you are expecting a bonus of £4k later this year?
