Will Aldi's Wisteria Flower?

I've bought a wisteria about 10 years ago (can't remember where from but it wouldn't be from a s/m or cheap place) and it's never flowered for me, although it's sited in very little soil by a wall in a raised bed which adjoins onto next door's garden. It puts out lots of growth but no flowers whatsoever. It's been pruned back over the years intermittently. I'm beginning to think it's a dud one that has never been grafted. So now I'm keen to buy a replacement but deciding on who to go with to buy one from - can someone recommend any nurseries near Nottingham please?

Or do you think the above link to Aldi's special offer next week is worth going for? Have they sold them before and flowered for anyone else?

I bought 2 on Newark market (Friday), one has not flowered yet (3 years) the other flowered in year 1...............

I also bought one for 5x the cost at Reg Taylor's in Southwell that was in flower when I bought it and has flowered every year.

Cost has a lot to do with when the wisteria will flower. A cheap one (under a tenner) will be a seed raised one and will (eventually) flower but could be 15 years or so before it does. A grafted one will cost upwards of £15 will usually flower that year or the next.

It's a beautiful plant, will grow extremely large and be with you for a long time. So I would invest in a good one from somewhere reputable.

I vowed never to go back to Reg Taylor's again once I saw their inflated prices, albeit that their plants are well-maintained for a garden centre.

Looks like I'll have to forgo the Aldi one and go for something more expensive.
  • I bought a Wisteria from Aldi's two years ago. First year didn't do anything. This year large pink flowers have started to bloom.

Grown in a pot in ordinary garden compost.

I took a look at the Aldi ones the other day and they clearly looked grafted to me I could see the join about 2" up from the rootstock so they should flower sooner.

Personally I think wisteria is one of the few plants you should take the time and the money to go buy a nice one which is already flowering/in bud from a local garden centre to be on the safe side after all a cheap one might only cost you a few pounds but take over a decade to actually flower where as a good plant might cost you £20 but actually be in flower and will do so year after year.

TBH Aldi have massive buying power with all their European stores, as do Lidl. All the plants I've bought from both chains have done OK except where I have neglected them ;), and Aldi's strawberry plants have been fantastic!
