Deeds info

My parents are just about to make the final payment on their house, will it cost them to get their deeds from the mortgage company (Britannia) and where do they store them when they get them. Is it safe to just keep them at home or with the bank/solicitor and do they charge much to store them?
TIA

Some banks and building societies will hold on to them for you if you leave a nominal sum on the mortgage - I work for nationwide and with us it is £1 (which doesnt accrue interest). You would need to find out from Brittania what their policy is. You might also find that the deeds are no longer in existence - they may be held electronically with the Land Registry. You can contact them here: http://www.landreg.gov.uk/#KiamaHouse0

Some banks & building societies don't even offer the option of holding them in safe storage.
I recently redeemed my mortgage and asked my bank the question you've asked here - I was told that they would return the deeds to me. As good as their word, the deeds arrived a week or so later.
