Should I tell the gym my direct debit has stopped?

Call it theft, stealing, dishonesty or whatever....... I call it THEIR INCOMPETENCE!
I wouldn't tell them anything!!0 -

As you are aware that the error has been made and are continuing to use the facilities without paying, this is actually a criminal offence. If you are honest they will probably waive part of it anyway.
I wonder why you have to ask whether you should be honest or not?
If you have children, you would tell them off if they tried to take something without paying, so why do you think it is OK for grown-ups?0 -

Why do you think it is a criminal offence ? If anything, it would be a civil matter.0 -
If two genuine mistakes then negotiate. It's not your fault their systems are so bad.
If you're in a position that you can't afford the back payments then let them know you've spotted an error so they can start taking the money again. You shouldn't have to find the back monies if they made the mistake.0 -
Yes to take something without payment is wrong, but if you offered the payment and they didn't take it surely it's their fault?
If I was the company and made the mistake I know I would have to take the hit for my own stupidity or if I found it was my bank's fault I would expect them to take the hit and reimburse me.
However if as the supplier you've provided good service and looked after your customers you might hope they would be loyal and tell you.0 -
As with other posters - you failed to notice for 18 months? Now you have noticed it would be dishonest of you not to bring it to the attention of the gym. You have benefited from their service - you should be prepared to pay for that service.
I am finding it quite sad the number of "dilemmas" where dishonesty seems to be the order of the day.0 -
If you were running a business and someone was using your services and not paying how would you feel! If you know you are not paying and continue to "take" it is tantamount to theft. Fess up and maybe they will negotiate a discount on what you owe for being honest0

You should own up. This is stealing.I'm so sexy it's a wonder my underpants don't explode.0

If you have an agreement to pay by Direct Debit, then it is the gym's responsibility to collect payment, and if they repeatedly failed to do so, then they are on dodgy ground if they later attempt to collect back payments. If their admin system is shown to be "suspect" they could even lose their status as a DD originator.
If you choose to pay them the missing money, that is up to you. I personally would probably do so if it is a community or charitable gym, but might be more reluctant if it is a full-blown commercial money-making setup. As I said above, they were failing to collect - you weren't refusing/failing to pay.--
