I must be 'special' because i have had about 4 of these sent out to me :D

Thing is these letters do seem legit, thats until you get to the last couple of paragraphs so Paul Varjak I can understand why some people could fall for this con.

Its the same as another type of scam which is a letter arrives through your door talking about a finance company, it gives you all the speel. They then attach one of them yellow stick on notes to the form and write something along the lies of : Joanne, try them they are brilliant. They use your name on the post it sticker and hope that you fall for the scam thinking its a reccomendation from a friend.

Well, I can do much better!

On Saturday I received notification (by snail mail) from the Spanish ‘Loteria Primitiva’, I had won some 600k GBP in the Spanish lottery and, to claim, they just needed my bank details.

I do not have any intentions whatsoever, to reply.
  • How glad i am that someone advised me to check out this offer from the`Unclaimed Prize register.` I just got my so called offer in the post. Even to a cynic it looked allmost tempting to get a digital camera for about twenty quid tops........having read these posts I am so very relieved that I didnt fall for it. many thanks to all who have posted warnings!
Also interesting to see that on the reverse the postal form option asks for your date of birth?
This `offer` is only fit to light the fire with.
  • I too received such a letter today, and after reading about the scam on this site it now resides in much smaller pieces in my rubbish bin. I had a strange feeling about this letter as I enter very few comps, and thanks to you I live to fight another day.

This is going to sound naive, but I'm just keen to check out the legalities of this...

I get a letter from the "Unclaimed Prize Register" - the only reason I'm writing this because somewhere in the back of my head, I have the notion that there is such a thing - OR SOMETHING SIMILAR!

The first sentence reads "Do you recall filling in and mailing an entry coupon for a competition, prize promotion or special offer?". It's a bit vague, as it doesn't say when this might have happened, but I'm prepared to go with it so far...

Next, it says that I've been allocated one of the following:

    - a Cheque for £20,000
    - a Panasonic 42" HD Plasma TV
    - a £2,000 Shopping Spree (or £2,000 Cash)
    - a Digital Camera
    - a Sony DVD camcorder
    - or £250 Premium Bonds

Incidentally, in the small print at the bottom it states that the electrical prizes require a £6.50 charge to be paid to cover insurance and delivery.

The letter contains a "unique" six-digit allocation code. Finally, there is a premium rate (£1.50 per minute, 6 minute maximum call length) phone number to call, or a postal address to send to.

Finally, there is a PS at the end stating that "You have definitely been selected to receive one of these awards."

Personally, I think it stinks of con. After all, if I'd won a prize, then surely it would be a specific item, and not one from a list of possibilities. If nothing else, this post may hopefully be of use to someone, either in the positive or at least to stop anyone from falling into some kind of trap. I'm just interested to see if anyone else may have recieved something like this and decided to dip their toe in the water to see what it was all about - and if such a thing is even legal and if not who to camplain to.

  • .....conning the general public is our game.

    Hello there.
Just had a reminder through the post as I had ignored their previous letter from July. Like the fool that I am, I haven't claimed my award yet, hence the reminder. Same awards as above...£20k cheque, nice big TV, shopping spree etc etc. Just need to ring a premium rate number or reply by post.

I'd better hurry up though as the closing date is 31.12.2007, so I'll probably get another reminder in November.

Anyway, reminder has gone in the B.1.N. file just like the original.

My advice to anyone else who receives a similar letter - BIN IT.

Have a nice day now. wink.gif

.....I thought I'd get another reminder in November...but it's already arrived.
Dated 4.10.07. A 'FINAL REMINDER' to act now or risk missing out.

It's gone in the same downward direction as my previous reminder - B1N file.
Closing date is 31.12.07, so there's still time for more reminders.

    Fingers crossed eh? sport-smiley-001.gif

I have had several of those so called reminders about winning non -existant prizes. I ended up 'phoning them and saying ''Good morning to you, I am just calling to ask you to remove all my details from your database, as I am fed up getting JUNK MAIL from you people.'' (01989 760538).:rotfl:

People shouldn't be made to feel naive & comments such as "you actually fell for this?!" should be struck off. I receive a lot of junk mail through the post and have never ever considered them until this 1. I have been completing online surveys for many years with reputable survey hosts, but this was the 1st such letter I had received referring to 1 so I eventually decided it was genuine. It was the camera and I did the necessary (form, stamps etc) to get it - I even got reminders about it until July! Never again and I no longer have a land line anyway.

I came across the correspondence just now as I was clearing out so decided to chase it, wishing I'd noticed there was no e-mail address or normal phone number to contact them which is what made me Google McIntyre & Dodds, leading me to this forum. So you don't have to be gullible to be fooled - wait until you can, and take the time to check things out online!! :o
