Sometimes I wonder if its the owner not looking after their property more than a genuine fault.
I sold my old 360 to a friend and its still going strong. It must be 8-9 years old by now.0 -

To be fair, the early 360's were hit and miss the red ring issue and consoles just becoming 'dead' if it happened. I had a one for less than a week a few months after 360 release and on the second boot-up it red ringed on me.
I agree though, 8-9 years is pretty good going. Especially if you haven't seen any noticeable slow downs or lacking in performance.
I rag my consoles quite a bit, not physically, but performance wise with things like very long sessions, sometimes 12 hour stints on weekends whilst snapping netflix/youtube/twitch or streaming on twich - the slow down on a few games whilst snapping video can be noticeable. I wouldn't be surprised if mine breaks down from overheating (although it is well ventilated and relatively dust free) after 3-5 years use. I wouldn't complain though, I know how I use it and would just pick up a newer model.Professional Data Monkey

Isn't there a rule that states the replacement of an electrical device, when replaced under warranty the first time is then extended to 5 years as a fault has been admitted with the device?
I collect old gaming hardware, the oldest non-PC system I have is an Atari Jaguar from 1994. Still works, absolutely fine. I have a Dreamcast and PlayStation 1 and both work absolutely fine and are both over 10 years old - PS1 being the audiophile version from 1995. So I would argue that there is a precedent that these systems are expected to last a long time.0 -
This might help:

Burden of proof is on you after 6 months, but warranty from EU directive is 2 years.0
