I recommend Schwalbe Marathon Plus too.

I didn't notice any difference in effort after switching to them although, as I use my bike partly for fitness and weight loss, any extra effort required would be a bonus as much as a negative.

Another votes for the Marathons - I'd had a few punctures commuting, then the local bike shop recommended the Marathons and haven't had a single problem since! I didn't notice the extra weight after the first day or so.

I guess it depends what kind of bike and what kind of route. I commute and cycle on the road, so I need no more than gatorskins (320gms) for the wet mucky days on my cyclocross, and Conti Grand Prix 4000sII on my roadie (230gms). I'm very weight conscious, so I couldn't put 800 gms of Marathon plus tyre on each wheel of my CX.

I've never had a puncture on my commute. I've had possibly 5 or 6 punctures ever- and as Armyknife said, it's only a few minutes to change a tube - relax, and enjoy the rest!
Make everything as simple as possible, but not simpler.

I prefer Panaracer Pasela Tour Guards to the Marathon plus's which are horribly sluggish The TGs have good puncture resistance where it matters, the tread area, but none in the side walls which is only an issue if you take them off road where you may encounter thorns.

7000km ridden on my current pair and just one puncture (blackthorn through the sidewall on a bridal way)

    It's a Boardman Hybrid Pro.

It gets used mostly on roads and cycle paths but a lot of the rural roads and cycle path routes have thorny bushes running along them which the council and farmers cut down but don't clear up all the mess so often thorns around.

Some parts have eroded badly with small sharp stones scattered about.

I've bought the Marathon Plus tyres just now to see how i get on. If they feel too sluggish and heavy i can always swap them for some Gatorskins and keep the Marathons aside for the winter.

I live in Scotland and it's still cold and wet up here so if i have to go a bit slower to avoid swapping tubes in the wind and rain, it'll be worth it

    I got them now.
    Marathon Plus 28c.
They are quite heavy feeling compared to it's current tyres but at my fitness level just now, the difference is negligible. Quite like the reflective rim on the sidewall as well for nights.

Decided to throw in a nice Ultegra 12-30 cassette as well.
