Is a new mortgage possible after repossession?

In 2007 I got myself into a financial mess with an ex partner which ultimately resulted in us having our home repossessed.
She almost immediately declared bankruptcy, I chose not to, instead I tried to clear my debts.
I worked through my credit card debts and loans and eventually cleared them, but unfortunately there was a shortfall in the mortgage I think of around £2000. The bank we had our mortgage with added on fees, late payment fines and interest to the tune of an extra £14,000. I knew I couldn't pay that and rightly or wrongly I didn't. I never made any payments to them or admitted liability. They threatened court action but never followed through. I still occasionally hear from them.
Fast forward 8 years, I've been trying to rebuild my credit. I've reached a point now where I am successful in applying for credit cards (which I pay off each and every month) and my credit file is all green.
I'm with a new partner now, we're looking to buy our own place (well, SHE is looking), she has a good deposit and has been approved for a mortgage.
But the reason I say she is looking is because many people have told me that once you have a home repossessed you can never have another mortgage, is this true? Because if I were to enter into the mortgage with my partner we could buy a much nicer home together.
Also, IF we did buy a house together would the previous bank have any claim to it from the repossession 8 years ago?

Having a previous home repossessed isn't an absolute bar to getting another mortgage - but it does make getting another mortgage enormously more difficult.
It's probably worth getting copies of your credit reports (all three of them) and then having a discussion with a broker who specialises in adverse credit.0
