Frozen wedding cake!!!!

Options
Hi

This is my first post - I usually just browse!

Don't know if this is the right place for this question but here goes. When we got married 5 years ago, we were very traditional and saved the top tier of our wedding cake - to use when little ones arrived as a christening cake!!

The cake is a fruit cake, and is still in the freezer wrapped in tin foil. My question is, will it still be okay, or should we just get rid of it??

Thanks in advance, emma jo x

  • 5 years is a bit too long esp. if it was only wrapped in tin foil - foil isn't airtight, and your cake probably has freezer burn. It could have also picked up smells + tastes from the other food in the freezer. Sorry!
  • My cake lasted 10 years. Was wrapped in tin foil and in a cake tin in the freezer, never found the right time to eat it but needed freezer space so gave it a go and it was fine apart from the icing which was discoloured fron the fruit.

My mum and dad kept the top of their cake in the freezer for 25 years (I wasnt christened). Got it out for their anniversary. Had it soaked in brandy and re-iced and it was fine. Dont know how they had wrapped it up cos I was only little!

    Hi,

we had the top tier of our cake for 8 years and it wasnt frozen. The icing usually seals the cake to the board and so keeps the air out. The idea being that you then take the old icing off, sometimes the cake needs a little extra liquid to make it moist and renew with fresh to suit the occasion. We did this for our sons christening and it didnt need extra liquid because my aunt had made the original and had made a very moist cake to start with. It was still delicious after 8 years.

We had our top tier for 6 years before we used it for ds christening - it wasn't frozen just wrapped up a lot in clingfilm - it was fine - took it to be re-iced and people commented on how tasty and moist it was!!

I would give it a go...

I would definitely check it out; ours was in the freezer for about 5 years, we even moved house so it defrosted once (!!) and that was only wrapped in greaseproof paper and then tinfoil; all I needed to do was have it re-iced for DS1s Christening and the cake tasted fab.
    That's Numberwang!
