Affordability checks, as an individual or a couple

I didn't know these existed now. I think this might be my un-doing.
In the last three month I have consistently spent more than I earnt due to the costs of cutting short a holiday to fly back to be t my mothers bed side as she past away for my partner and I.
I had quite a large inheritance so I have not gone into my overdraft but the cost of convening family, flowers and meals for everyone make me looklike a big spender. I don't regret spending the money.
We were insured for the flights but although I paid for it the insurer paid the money to my partner.
I needed a new suit and this in the previous six months had been preceded by one off expensive repairs to my car.
In my grief I wasn't my usual frugal self and spent a but here and then on entertainment.
So I will have a hard job justifying whether I am a good bet.
My partner however has been more frugal than ever. So all in all as a twosome we definitely earnt more than we spent in the last three months.
Does anyone know whether they take into account purely the afforadability on an individual level or as a couple.
Due to events we weren't house hunting so my accounts has money whizzing in and out of savings accounts and back again so will be headache inducing anyway. Any help proferred will be much appreciated.
We are still very liquid and offering a 15% deposit on two good credit ratings within our decision in principle.
