Should I pay for lipoma removal surgery?

Hi all,
I’m in a dilemma, I have Lipomas in my upper arms and neck. At first, it seems like a soft, painless rubbery substance inside my skin. But now, I am feeling intense pain on it and it drains a foul smelling discharge. I’m irritated with this and consulted my family doctor. He suggested me for a lipoma removal surgery. So I had googled for a cosmetic surgery center who are good in Lipoma removal and had found Lakeview surgery center in Barrie. They are offering a safe surgery. But my doubt is should I pay for Lipoma surgery? Is it really worth? Is there any chance to grow Lipoma after the surgery? How much does a Lipoma surgery cost? Please help me.

Hi Lindam.
I have had a couple of lipomas removed on the NHS, one at my GP's surgery and one at the local hospital. I don't see why you should have to pay for their removal, especially if they are causing you pain. I've not had any that discharged, may be worth getting this check out?
I have several (non-painful) lipomas but only get them on my lower arms and upper legs, quite bizarre. I would love to know a way to reduce/remove them but my GP says that there is nothing I can do with regards to diet/exercise and that its just something I am prone to and have to put up with!
Good luck

Hi, don't know of this condition first hand, but being of a curious nature I did some G**gling, the following link mentions discharge and pain. (Sorry unable to do hidden link thing for some reason)

I think if it were me I would certainly go the NHS route unless the waiting time is horrific and/or the symptoms really getting you done. Did you ask your GP about waiting times?
Good luck with getting it sorted. The best thing about the future is that it comes one day at a time. (Abraham Lincoln)0 -
I don't think the OP is from the UK, so the NHS route is out.0

Lakeview Center is in Ontario, Canada. Is that where you are based?
I have no idea what you can get on the state healthcare over there and what you have to stump up for yourself, but here in the UK lipoma removal is not done on the NHS unless there is a medical reason to remove it.
However I have never heard of lipomas emitting discharge or being painful. I would double-check the diagnosis, I think.0 -

Thank you, teach me to read and post when in a hurry.

The webmed link I posted mentioned pain and unpleasant smelling discharge as being a reason for surgical removal. I hope that the OP manages to sort it out, sounds rather nasty. The best thing about the future is that it comes one day at a time. (Abraham Lincoln)0
