Claiming overpaid income tax through HMRC

Hi,

I received a lump sum income payment having recently left my employer which was all taxed at a PAYE temporary tax code based on zero personal allowance and at 45%. This means I have a decent bit of overpaid tax to reclaim but is there any way I can claim it now from HMRC or will I have to wait until I do my self assessment form as that would mean pretty much a year from now given this payment was received after 5 April 2015? (Appreciate that if I was planning to return to employment soon then tax code at my new employer would be adjusted to reflect the overpayment but given plans to travel / take some time out then could do with getting back the overpayment in the not too distant future.)

Thanks.

was the payment included on the P45 details?

If so you can make an in year repayment claim using the form P50 which you can download from the GOV.uk website.
