I use an Abus Granit X-Plus 54 d-lock. On a par with the Kryptonite d-lock. I got mine rather than the Kryptonite as Amazon randomly dropped its price to £40 which was an absolute bargain. For locking frame and back wheel to a rack, the 23cm version is ample - you don't need the 30cm.

Not surprised the Halfords cable lock above was snipped. A good quality D-lock will always beat a cable lock. According to reviews, it takes almost five minutes to go through my D-lock with an angle grinder. I hope that someone making that racket in my work car park would attract attention.

I used to then separately lock my front wheel with a cable lock, but don't bother since getting Pitlock security skewers:

If you have a Tesco clubcard, you can double up your Clubcard vouchers for Evans vouchers - ie £20 of Clubcard vouchers would buy the skewers above:

Revisiting this thread again as a guy just got his £1700 carbon road bike stolen from outside the work on Sunday there.

We have reduced security on a Sunday due to many of the businesses in the complex not being open.

The thief must have either been up to check out the bikes earlier in the day, or else had been tipped off.
When security checked the CCTV a young lad cycled up to the bicycle area on a cheap Diamond Back, parked it, hopped off, took bolt cutters out his rucksack, snipped the bike lock on the expensive bike and cycled away on it. Total time was about 40 seconds.

I've spoken to the guy who had his bike stolen and he was using this lock

Medium bolt cutters went through it like butter.

What's the difference between the New York lock and the Evolution locks? I've decided the Kryptonite D lock i initially posted isn't going to be good enough. I've already got an heavy duty motorcycle chain up at my work just now i leave chained around a post, but a good D lock seems essential as well now.

These are the two locks. The New York lock is 16mm diameter while the series 4 is 14mm diameter. New york weighs 1980g while the Series4 weighs in at 1555g. They should both do what I need them to do, ie deter a thief in a busy city centre bike park. They would need to be ground rather than bolt cropped. A decent set of bolt croppers will make mince meat of most cables quietly and fairly quickly.
The other point is that these locks will allow you to claim on your insurance if they're defeated.

Make everything as simple as possible, but not simpler.
