Need a Debit Card

Went bankrupt 3 years ago (March 2004), discharged a year later. After discharge I asked if Nationwide would upgrade my account, to which they refused. However, 2 years on, I went into my branch the other day, and they still refused to give me one (a card that is).

Whereabouts have others got debit cards from? I'm finding it more of a need now as my mum has moved out so cant 'borrow' her card when I need to and give her the cash, so really need one of my own.

Has anyone had luck with Citibank (apparently they offer it to discharged bankrupts), or elsewhere?

Lots of people got accounts with Citibank months ago.

From memory, they then tightened up their criteria and started refusing.

There were lots of threads on DQ about them at the time

I parked in a red route and raised an informal dispute with them within the 14 days. I believe they're then supposed to freeze the charge until they at least respond. They then raised it to £100, sent them another couple of emails. They then raised it to £150. At this point I said I couldnt pay it until they addressed the points raised earlier.

Eventually I decided to offer them £50 and wrote another letter. This crossed in the post with a letter from them saying the PCN had been cancelled! Obviously I had to quickly cancel the cheque :p

But it's well worth challenging if you feel you have a case. If they dont respond then continue to create a trial of correspondence into them to show you've been pursuiing it and it's their own negligence that has led to the increase in fines. I didnt actually have a case but I think they cancelled because they knew they should have responded. The only response I ever got was a templated notice of rejection which didnt address the points I raised, so was a bit useless.

    Hi piggeh,

Can't you upgrade your cheque account to include a debit card? Or do you upgrade an account with a debit card to include a cheque book?

Not sure there's an easy answer to that one.:confused:

the cheque was from my mum's account on that one. She would let me use her card/chequebook if I gave her the cash, but now she's moved out its a bit more difficult.

Hi, don't know if this will help, we went br in June 2004 & discharged in December 2004, we managed to get an account last Sept with Nat West called Step Account, this comes with a Solo Debit Card. I not come across anywhere yet that's its not accepted. It's worth a try, good luck.
